Nov. 6, 2018– Today marks the day in which Nebraskan voters will cast their ballots for a governor, senator, House representatives, and whether to expand Medicaid coverage.

This election is expected to be very close and likely to be undecided until the next day. Voters will decide if the Republican or Democratic party will take control of the House and Senate.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The candidates running for governor include current Republican governor, Pete Ricketts, and Democrat Bob Krist. The two have debated on various issues including property taxes and prison reform.

Current Republican United States Senator Deb Fischer is running against Democrat Jane Raybould. Fischer was elected as a senator in 2012, and Raybould helps manage her family’s 53 year old grocery business.

In the second district, the race for the United States House has brought upsets and national attention. Previous democratic congressman, Brad Ashford was defeated by Democrat Kara Eastman in the primary to run against current House representative, Don Bacon. Bacon defeated Ashford in 2016 in the general election.

In addition to electing representatives, Initiative 427, the motion to increase Medicaid to about 90,000 low-income adults without insurance in Nebraska will be voted on. Those who support the proposal believe it will keep more people healthy and working, while opposers believe the cost is too high.
