The boys’ and girls’ trip set out to take care of business in Kearney last Friday. The boys’ team captured their first ever state title, while the girls’ were runner-ups.

 

The girls’ began Senior Maria Lasala lead Skutt Catholic thorough basically the entire race, and finished 9th place. Sophomore Mary Kate Orr followed shortly after finishing 15th place, Jaeden Bunda, Grace Faltin, Megan Kanger, and Sarah Gregory followed the two within the top fifteen. The girls’ team finished an impressive third place as Lincoln Pius X and Elkhorn finished on top.

 

The boys’ race was scheduled for 1:30 pm, and the anticipation was growing as Skutt Catholic was hoping for a second consecutive state championship. As the race began Skutt Catholic four runners within the top fifteen, state title hopes were looking very promising.

 

One thing Skutt Catholic had not yet accomplished was an individual state champion, until after the race. Sophomore Ryan Zavadil jumped in front of Blair’s Sam Lueders in the last 800 meters to win the race, and be the first SkyHawk ever to win the State Cross Country Meet. Ryan led his team to their second consecutive state championship by winning in a cozy 32 point decision.

 

“It was epic, winning the race was unexpected, I honestly didn’t think I was going to catch him.” said Zavadil. Skutt Catholic finished with five runners in the top twenty, and Junior Blake Manternach coming off an injury had the mindset of nothing will stop him, closed the door for other teams to capture the gold.
