May 3, 2018 was the final passing of the light of leadership from one class to another. The light of leadership mass is a tradition at Skutt that is celebrated once a year with symbolic passing of leadership from seniors to juniors using electric tea candles and SkyHawk pins.

The mass is a beautiful service that begins with the entire senior class walking in in pairs, carrying in tea candles. The members of the senior class all dress up in their best for this mass, looking fit for a formal occasion. They walked toward the front of the gym, and placed their candles down in the shape of a cross, leaving their leadership for the juniors. The mass continues as regular, just with extra emphasis on the ideas of the seniors’ guidance and the end of their time at Skutt Catholic.

Deacon Tim Bloomingdale’s homily was a small farewell to the seniors and wishing them the best, with an encouraging speech. The beloved deacon was almost teary-eyed with the thought of the senior class leaving the school in just a few days.

The mass ended with “Go Light Your World”, a spiritual song about giving light to those in darkness, as the juniors left their spots on the bleachers to pick up a candle that the seniors previously put there. From there, they collect their SkyHawk pin and the leadership is symbolically passed on.
