Apr. 16, 2018 — Members of the Skutt Catholic Flightline staff ventured to San Francisco, CA on Thursday, April 12 and returned Sunday, April 15. While in San Francisco, staff members attended the annual NSPA journalism convention.

The NSPA spring convention focuses on recognizing Pacemaker finalists and winners for an online site, a yearbook and magazines. The Skutt Catholic Flightline was recognized as a Pacemaker Finalist at the opening ceremony.

During the convention, students took part in various seminars and workshops that focused on how to improve their writing, leadership and organization of their work flow. These classes were led by advisors and journalists from across the country.

Staff members also had the opportunity to compete individually in Journalism Education Association sponsored write offs. In these competitions, students were given two hours to write an article or produce an illustration based on a given prompt and provided research articles.

The results of the individual categories were announced at the concluding ceremonies. Senior Tom Hermanek received an Excellent for his work in news editing, and senior Maria Koliopoulos was awarded an Excellent for her literary magazine illustration. Junior Nathan Fletcher received Honorable Mention for his editorial cartoon, and sophomore Alaina Anderson was awarded Honorable Mention in commentary writing.

The Flightline website was awarded ninth place in Best of Show at the concluding ceremonies. Next year’s convention will take place in Anaheim, CA.
