Mar. 23, 2018 — After a successful season, the Skutt Catholic speech team was unable to claim the state title at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

“We got 4th, which is fairly terrible for us but not unexpected given how hard our district was,” said Skutt Catholic Speech Coach Brent Goetzinger. “I would describe the general experience as the verisimilitude of getting kicked in the face repeatedly but continuing to smile. So, as I said, a great time,” Goetzinger continued.

The team placed second overall last year, with Cal Strawhecker winning the title of state champion in humorous interpretation.

This year, though five students went to finals, none received the title of state champion, so the team finished 4th overall.

“It was pretty disappointing,” said senior Kevin Rice. “No one did as well as we thought we would.”

Five students made finals; seniors Kevin Rice and Max Korensky acted out their duet, junior Joseph McAuliffe presented his entertainment piece, senior Emerson Hughes executed her informative speech and junior Matthias Walters performed his humorous interpretation.

“I’m disappointed in myself for messing up a line in finals which landed me in last — however, I’m grateful and proud to have made it to finals,” said junior Matthias Walters. “The experience is always so fun and quirky,” Walters continued.

Next year, SkyHawk speechers will hope for yet another successful season with a more satisfying close.
