Feb. 6, 2018–Saturday, Skutt Catholic Vivace claimed first place at West Liberty High School’s Stars on Stage competition. They competed against ten other small schools from across the Midwest.

Two years ago, Vivace won the school’s first ever grand championship at the same competition. Last year, they came in second to Bravo from Pella High School of Pella, Iowa.

Show Choir competitions take place in two rounds: daytime and finals. In the daytime performance, choirs are scored on a number of categories and awarded a score out of a certain total. The top six schools then advance to finals.

“I thought maybe we would be in the top two or three during the course of the day,” Director Chris Storm said. Vivace claimed the fourth spot to advance.

“Going into the competition I didn’t really know what to expect because competitions are so subjective… all I knew was that there was going to be a lot of good show choirs and we were going to have to work our butts off to do well,” said senior Chris King. “I can’t believe we managed to jump from fourth place to first place and beat Pella,” King concluded.

Vivace not only climbed to the top from fourth place, but also received best choreography after being scored fifth in that category during the daytime.

Storm still plans on pushing the choir farther. “We’re working a lot still on the singing aspect and making some changes there; trying to make it a little more interesting all the way through the show,” Storm said.
