Feb. 1, 2018 — A palpable buzz floated about in Skutt Catholic’s senior hallway Thursday morning.

Seniors, excited to be back from winter break and ready to take on yet another semester of learning, chattered about in anticipation of the seven or eight classes that were in store for each of them.

Not only were seniors anxious to return to the grind after a winter break that felt as though it were extended by snow days, they were enthusiastic about taking classes reserved for only Skutt Catholic’s most seasoned students.

“I can’t wait to sink my teeth into some Senior Studies coursework,” says senior Zephyr Desa. “In fact, I’ve been so impatient that I went ahead and read The Rhythm Boys of Omaha Central over break. I finished that before New Year’s, so I digested the entire textbook next. That got me so fired up that I watched a bunch of documentaries about social injustices on Netflix, so like, yeah, I’d say I’m already doing my part to aid the afflicted.”

Though ‘senioritis’ has plagued previous graduating classes, seniors attest that the Class of 2018 has remained clear of infection. “Yeah, I had some nasty cold earlier this month, but I’m clear of that stuff,” says twelfth-grader Mia Morrissey. “Honestly, I’m not worried about catching senioritis, either. Studying derivatives and integrals, poetry, President Taft’s administration–these are my true passions,” Morrissey continued.

In fact, even the thought of graduation strikes dread into the stomachs of seniors. “I can’t imagine not having 8 hours of coursework each day,” says senior Kevin Rice. “Frankly, graduation sounds utterly terrifying. That’s why I’m considering a fifth-year ‘victory lap,’” Rice continued.

Luckily, 13 weeks of high school remain for Skutt Catholic’s senior class. Savor them, seniors!
