A typical art exhibit usually consists of beautifully calculated brushstrokes on canvases. However, artist Nathan Sawaya chose to take a different approach. Sawaya uses LEGO Building Blocks to construct old and new masterpieces in The Art of the Brick.

The traveling exhibit, which is currently housed in the Capital District is divided into different sections, beginning with Past Masters. This part of the exhibition displays classics such as Van Gogh’s “A Starry Night” made out of LEGOs.

After the recreation of past works, a series of original pieces amaze viewers with their depth and intricacy. Each piece is accompanied by a brief description and a count of how many blocks it took to make the piece.

The exhibition concludes with In Pieces, a multimedia collaboration between Sawaya and photographer Dean West. They work together to incorporate Sawaya’s sculptures into West’s photography. The goal is to communicate ideas about nature, culture, society, and identity.

The Art of the Brick is a refreshing and unique take on art that intertwines old and new masterpieces. Go and experience the exhibit before it leaves Omaha on Feb. 19.
