Dec. 14, 2017 — Today, underclassmen may have been put off after taking a look around; one fourth of the student body was walking around in suits, ties, and high heels. Fortunately, there was a non-funeral or -wedding related reason for this: today was the seniors’ long-awaited congressional hearings.

The seniors have been preparing for these hearings for over a month and a half. In late October, they were split up into groups of three to five, the same set of people that they presented with today, and had the project explained to them. In the last month, they have been slowly working at the project with their groups.

Some dedicated groups found time to work on their hearings outside of school in preparation for today’s hearings. “To get ready, my group and I got together and practiced a few times,” says senior Zoe Weland. “Mostly we just worked on editing so that we wouldn’t go over time.”

At the hearings today, the groups were asked to formally introduce themselves in front of a panel of three judges, most of whom were alumni, faculty, or parents of other seniors. After introductions, the group was told which of three questions their judges had selected;  they then read the corresponding answer that the group had prepared. After finishing their answer, the group faced six minutes of follow-up questions from judges and a quick critique at the end.

The seniors felt mostly pleased with their congressional hearing performances. “I think our hearing went really well,” says Weland. “It ended up being a lot easier than I thought it would be.”

On Monday, Dec. 18, the 8th period class will be advancing to the state competition with Mrs. Meyer. Overall, the day was a successful and informative one for Skutt Catholic’s seniors.
