Dec. 7, 2017 — Time Magazine has named the “Silence Breakers” as its 2017 Person of the Year.

This group of individuals is those who have experienced harassment or assault in their lives and have come forward and told the world about their experiences. Such individuals range from those working in Hollywood to those walking the streets as everyday people.

Time’s pick of such a vast group of individuals may seem out of the ordinary. But, it really isn’t strange for Time to choose a group of people who have made an impact on the world as their Person of the Year. In fact, in the 90 years that Time has been naming recipients of the award, choosing more than one person actually happens more often than it may seem.

Many groups such as the U.S. scientists in 1960, “American Women” in 1975, the “Peacemakers” in 1993, “the Whistleblowers” in 2002, and even as general as “You” in 2006 have been named Time’s Person of the Year. The Person of the Year is chosen as someone who has made an impact, and this year, Time recognizes those who have done so through the #MeToo campaign. This hashtag took over many social media platforms, drawing attention from people from all walks of life.
