The road to a state championship continued for the SkyHawks on November 3rd as they dominated Platteview. Skutt Catholic will play Bennington on November 9th for the right to advance to the semifinals. The SkyHawk players will not be satisfied until they accomplish their goal set at the beginning of the season: win another state championship.

Skutt Catholic started off strong in the first set, as they crushed the Trojans 25-9; accomplished through crushing serves by senior Taylor O Malley, well-placed sets by senior Delaney Saucier, and strong blocks by junior Lily Heyne. However, the second set was closer and more exciting. Skutt Catholic won by a score of 25-18, as Platteview managed to find a way to return the serves they couldn’t in the first set. Up 2-0, the SkyHawks secured the spot in the quarterfinals with a 25-18 victory in the third set.

With a win over Bennington, Skutt Catholic will play Gretna or Elkhorn South in the semifinals. With a victory over either one of these teams, Skutt Catholic will clinch a berth to the state championship game on November 11. The SkyHawks have already beat the Storm on October 31st, winning 3 sets to 1. Skutt Catholic has not faced Gretna this season.

On the other side of the bracket, one of the teams that the SkyHawks could face is number 3 seed Northwest. One of the few teams to beat Skutt Catholic this season is the Northwest Ravens. On October 5th, the SkyHawks lost 3 sets to 1. The first three sets between these two teams were very close.

If Skutt Catholic does play them in the state championship, they will look for revenge. “We had a great performance on Saturday, said head coach Renee Saunders. But we have to continue that level of performance if we want win a state championship”,Saunders continued.

Saturday was a great showing for the SkyHawks and they try to replicate that success throughout the state playoffs. The road to Pinnacle Bank won’t be easy, but the SkyHawks will look to display that they are the best team in class B.
