On Saturday, Nov. 4, the Skutt Catholic speech team debuted their talents at Bellevue West for the first meet of the season. The team of 37 finished as the top Class B school at the meet, with four finalist entries spread across three categories.

Speech meets are divided into up to nine categories: Oral Interpretation of Drama, Duet Acting, Serious Prose, Extemporaneous, Humorous Prose, Informative, Poetry, Persuasive, and Entertainment. The competitors recite their speech before a panel of judges and are scored on a scale of 1-50. The top six to eight entries in each category advance to the finals round, where each speech is given again and the final results are tallied.

The finals rounds are incredibly competitive; only four of the SkyHawks’ forty-plus entries made it to finals. Seniors Emerson Hughes and Caroline Hilgert finished fifth in Duo Interpretation. Senior Rachel Oberfoell finished second and senior Caleb Sudbeck finished fifth in informative speaking. Junior Matthias Walters also finished third in humorous interpretation.

This type of finish bodes well for the rest of the season. “We did a lot better than we were expecting,” junior Hannah Rodricks said. “It was the first meet so you have to start somewhere,” Rodricks continued.

The team might have lost many of its seasoned veterans, but there has been more than enough new talent to make up for it. “It’s my first year, and I don’t really know what to expect,” junior Morgan Dvorak said. “I think that just makes me work harder,” Dvorak continued.

There is a lot to celebrate, but the SkyHawks are already looking ahead. “First meets usually give us a nice start with feedback from judges,” Walters said. “We take off from there. Mr. Goetzinger is packing this week with practices so we all improve,” Walters continued. Hopes are high for late in the season. “I think we have a good chance [of winning state] if we put in the time and effort,” Rodricks said.

Although the season’s just getting started, there’s no doubt about it: the Skutt Catholic speech team is something to watch this year.
