It’s that time of year again. A time where people create puns to ask someone to prom. Each “promposal” is documented and out on twitter or facebook. Why can’t this just be a simple question anymore?

Promposals have become too ceremonial and intimidating. With social media becoming a dominant method of communication, people expect to see everyone’s prom invite on the internet. To make this interesting, the invitees have to come up with a pun or a creative way of asking someone to prom. While this is a fun way of asking someone, it becomes a problem when it is expected.

Peer pressure (though cliché) is a large reason that this becomes a problem. If there is a person that might already have a fear of asking someone, having a peer breathing down their back trying to make it a big deal might cause some anxiety.

Another problem is that it can’t just be, “Hey, do you want to go to prom?” Even well-know couples are still expected to make the question known to everyone. Why can’t we just assume they will be going together? This expectation will cause less people to go and enjoy their time there.

Some of these promposals just go overboard. If you need to bring in

other people just to bring attention to the question, you must be pretty desperate. When there is a coordinated group moving around to some song, you have to ask the question: “Whey couldn’t you just ask?”

We should not have to be expected to make a big deal out of a small question. Let people do what they want to do, and if that means they just ask someone without pomp and circumstance, let it happen.
