Only one in twenty high school baseball players actually play at the college level. Even fewer start as a freshman, let alone as a walk on. Fewer yet, become the sole run to beat an undefeated top 10 teams. Despite this, all of these perfectly describes Skutt Catholic Alum Morris John “Mojo” Hagge.

Hagge graduated in 2016. His senior year was definitely one for the books, as he was apart of the Super All-State team. He batted .466, scored 36 runs, and batted in 23 more. This effort helped lead the SkyHawks to become state runner-ups.

“He’s very coachable and he’s a great leader,” Skutt Catholic  Baseball Coach Mr. Shawn Exner said. “He’s a hard worker and he’s very dedicated.”

This spring, all that hard work, and dedication paid off, in the form of a roster spot at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s baseball team. “I’ve always wanted to play college baseball,” Hagge said. “It’s just a goal I had growing up.”

Hagge wasted no time making his mark once he got to Lincoln.

“Mojo has done nothing but work hard since he arrived on campus,” Nebraska Baseball Coach Mr. Darin Erstad said. “We have an open competition in the fall and he took full opportunity to get himself ready for the season.  His desire and work ethic have put him in a position to succeed.”

This hard work is paying dividends so far this season, as Hagge has played in all but one game. Currently, he’s been moved up to the leadoff hitter and has thrived in this role. The best example of this took place on March 5th against then #9 Arizona. Hagge singled and due to a pickoff throwing error, he got to third base. He was batted in, and by the end of the game, the Huskers had won 1-0. While it took a stellar pitching performance, Hagge had still been the only offense all day.

“I attribute all of my success to my coaches and family,” Hagge said. “They all supported me and always pushed me.” While this early success is great for the walk-on, he knows it’s not the end goal. “As a team, we want to host a regional, and get to a super regional,” Hagge continued.

Through the first few weeks of play Hagge has truly impressed by hitting over .370 and leading the team in batting average. “It’s pretty cool to come and get playing time,” Hagge said. “But there is still a lot of open competition, so we need to further ourselves as a team.”

While it is still early in the season, this hot start by a walk-on freshman at a Big Ten school like Nebraska, is extremely impressive. Hopefully, he can keep it up, and maybe even play in Omaha again this year.
